Berlin Left-Wing Politician Elif Eralp Admits Fear of Hamas Sympathizers in Leaked Documents

An Accidental Leak and a Mayor’s Private Terror

Berlin mayoral candidate Elif Eralp faces intense political scrutiny after internal interview notes revealed she and her husband fear retaliation from Hamas sympathizers in the capital. The documents, intended solely for internal office use, surfaced when Eralp’s press team accidentally returned unedited commentary alongside her authorized review of a Spiegel interview conducted earlier in the week.

The controversy centers on Ibrahim Ibrahim, a supporter of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP) who attended a September campaign party hosted by Berlin-Neukölln’s Left party. Notes revealed that Eralp wanted the interview responses concerning Ibrahim excised entirely, quoting her internal note: “I cannot put myself and my family in danger for ‘Spiegel’. What are we doing now? Can we cancel the whole interview?” Ibrahim reportedly praised Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar as a “martyr hero,” heightening the tensions surrounding his presence at the leftist gathering.

Police Directives Meet Public Backlash

Defending her reluctance to name Ibrahim publicly, Eralp pointed to past directives from the State Criminal Police Office (LKA). According to notes, authorities previously advised her never to mention specific names when dealing with organized crime, a protocol her office argues applies equally to individuals maintaining ties to terrorist organizations. Eralp’s communications team emphasized that the mayoral hopeful has confronted daily hostility, threats, and insults for months, making safety precautions necessary.

Yet, the political fallout has been swift and unforgiving. Figures from opposing parties have seized on the leaked admissions to question Eralp’s fundamental readiness to govern. Christopher Förster, a CDU lawmaker from Neukölln, argued that Berlin requires a leader prepared to confront extremists rather than allow them to dictate public discourse. Meanwhile, security expert Burkard Dregger warned that politicians who associate with Hamas criminals and their henchmen in Berlin should not be surprised if they demand a price for their election support.

Complicating a Coalition Path for the Left

Eralp’s ultimate political ambitions involve securing the office of Governing Mayor via a potential coalition alongside the Greens and the Social Democratic Party (SPD). However, the revelation that a prospective head of government feels personally intimidated by local extremists complicates her platform on internal security. A leader who cannot bring herself to name terror sympathizers publicly raises serious doubts about her capacity to manage the city’s security apparatus.
