On social networks, a video has been circulating massively for several hours. It would have been filmed this Friday followingnoon in a café in Bertrix. In it, we can see two men: one, dressed in a suit jacket, is sitting at the bar. The second, in a white t-shirt, is standing next to the first man. Let us point out that we know nothing of the context which precedes the altercation, but we can see the man in the suit taking out his mobile phone. The man in the white t-shirt violently snatches the device from him and throws it behind the bar. In the seconds that followed, blows were delivered to the head of the man in the suit by the man in the white t-shirt.
A concerned police officer
The story might have been a simple café altercation if the person in the white t-shirt did not hold a position within the police. From which area exactly? Presumably from the Semois-et-Lesse police zone, competent in the territory of Bertrix, but which currently refuses to comment.
Racist attack?
As for the mayor of Bertrix, Mathieu Rossignol, he confirms to us that he is aware of the facts and is already discussing the consequences of this act. “I have just received information that a call for a demonstration in front of the Commune has been launched. I don’t have any more details,” he explains to us by telephone. This call for demonstrations comes from the fact that the victim of the beating is a black person, and therefore that it would be an attack of a racist nature. On the side of the Prosecutor’s Office, we are confirmed that reports are being drawn up. “The Public Prosecutor’s Office was indeed informed of the facts. We cannot communicate anything more, because we still have to draw up various reports,” comments the press magistrate, Anne-Sophie Guilmot. The perpetrator confirms that he is a police officer.
The man, who was not on duty at the time of the incident, describes a situation to us once morest the backdrop of an identity check that he took on his own initiative which went wrong. He gave us his version of the facts in which he explains the slip-up. He confirms “having seen red and having done wrong. If I am suspended, it’s normal,” he admits. The policeman certifies that he is not racist.
No suspension has yet been issued once morest the inspector incriminated in the video. A few hours before the closing of Viva for Life, which has been taking place for a week on the Place des Trois Fers, Bertrix would have done well without this bad publicity…
