The latest increase in coronavirus cases, driven by highly transmissible omicron sub-mutants BA.4 and BA.5, is perhaps a reminder that the fight against COVID is far from over.

Some scientists have found slight differences in the disease caused by the newer strains compared to their ancestors. And an immunologist warned of the appearance of a warning sign at night, according to the “Russia Today” website.

Recent results showed that BA.5 is the most infectious strain that has been recorded so far.

The most common symptoms reported were a runny nose, sore throat, headache, persistent cough and fatigue.

The ZOE Covid Symptom Study, which asks people to self-report their symptoms, revealed that less than a third of people also reported a fever.

Professor Luke O’Neill, from Trinity College Dublin, told Newstalk: “An additional symptom of BA.5 I saw this morning was night sweats. Isn’t that strange? The disease is a little different because the virus has changed.”

He added: “There is some immunity to it – obviously with T cells and so on – and this combination of the immune system and the slightly different virus may lead to a slightly different disease, and strangely enough, night sweats is a characteristic. If you get vaccinated, it will not develop into a serious disease.”

A recent study, led by researchers at Columbia University’s College of Physicians and Surgeons, found that BA.4/5 mutants were at least four times more resistant in vaccinated individuals.

David D. said: He, MD, medical director and director of the Aaron Diamond AIDS and Clyde’56 Research Center: “The virus continues to evolve, as expected and it is not surprising that these new, more transmissible variants are becoming more prevalent around the world. Understanding how to counteract the currently available vaccines and antibody therapies. The new sub-variables are critical to developing strategies for preventing severe disease, hospitalization and mortality – if not infection.”

The best way to prevent the emergence of new mutations, the researchers said, is to vaccinate and boost.

Scientists have consistently emphasized that vaccination is the most effective tool for preventing serious diseases caused by “Covid” infection.
