Beware of Temu: The Hazards of Shopping Like a Billionaire – Customer Reviews, Verdicts, and Ethical Concerns

“Shop like a billionaire” is his slogan. And yes, it’s true, given the incredibly low prices of the merchandise on offer, it’s easy to buy a lot for next to nothing. But it’s too good to be true. Here are the hazards of consumption in Temu.

A disastrous customer experience

Via the original site, more than 700 complaints have been published. On Trust pilot (Danish website bringing together reviews about companies), there are 36% votes at 1 star out of 5, among 9,682 reviews. This is without counting the opinions through social networks. Type “Temu” into Instagram or Tiktok, and you’ll see endless videos of aggrieved buyers. And for positive videos, be sure to check if they are sponsored content.

Some customers ask for their package, the color of which they have never seen. For others, part of the order is missing. And there are countless complaints about poor quality. After-sales service is reduced to online chat. As a result, many customers deplore never having been able to be reimbursed.

Testachats’ verdicts

The conclusions leave no doubt. “Our analysis of 28 articles demonstrates the poor quality of these as well as a threatened security for the buyer”, we can read on the site of Testachats. Because yes, many products sold are banned on the European market, in particular toys that do not comply with safety regulations. Cosmetic products are also singled out: they found at least one non-compliance in all the items tested.

”The global success of the Chinese e-commerce application Temu can be explained in particular by its strong presence on social networks and very aggressive marketing. Their campaigns are everywhere and the platform combines shopping and gaming.” One of the sales techniques involves telephone games, which are in reality a facade to lead the customer to purchase online.

The gain lies largely in the data

According to TF1, the company loses around 30 euros per order. On the one hand, there is the problem of competition. In Europe, selling at a loss is prohibited in certain countries, including Belgium. On the other hand, the burning question is: how does the company make a profit? Well, thanks to you. Buyers’ personal data is sucked up by the sales platform and resold for profit. Behind the facade of toys, cosmetics and gadgets of all kinds, there is another market. And the way Temu does this is perplexing. Periodically, when you surf the site, questions appear on the screen. Avoiding them is not so tempting, because in exchange for answers, a discount is offered. This is how a large part of personal information is collected.

What about ethics in all of that ?

Like Shein and many brands listed on the “wall of shame,” Temu uses forced trafficking to build its products, particularly those for Uighurs. And then, environmentally, it’s not worth drawing a picture. The products are almost all sent from China, so the trip alone costs the planet a lot. So, still want to “shop like a billionaire”?
