Beyfortus Shortage in France: Concerns for Parents of Young Children

Beyfortus is facing a shortage in France.

This is one of the concerns of parents of young children. Bronchiolitis, a highly contagious viral infection mainly affecting infants and children under two years of age, attacks the smallest bronchi and generally causes minor breathing difficulties.

Although the majority of cases are mild, some children may present with some complications. And while France has just put a new preventive treatment on the market – Beyfortus – it is already out of stock, the health authorities having clearly underestimated the success of this monoclonal antibody intended for babies weighing less than five kilos.

Result: only French social security holders can currently obtain it. This means that employees and residents of the Principality – even if they are of French nationality – cannot access it, since they are affiliated with the Monaco Social Funds.

Given that the very controlled delivery of Beyfortus is ensured by Santé Publique France, “ on this subject, we are unfortunately not autonomous, but dependent on France which is experiencing tensions », indicated Christophe Robino, Government Advisor-Minister of Social Affairs and Health, during a press conference this Thursday, October 5.

34 doses at CHPG

Christophe Robino, however, specified that Monaco was able to obtain 34 doses for the Princess Grace Hospital Center, intended for newborns. 300 additional doses have been ordered.

« Fortunately, most cases are treated at home. The number of serious cases remains extremely low », reassured the Government Advisor-Minister. The latter added that, within the framework of the 2017 Health Cooperation Convention, the Principality has discussions with the French authorities and, in fact, hopes to obtain enough doses to benefit employees.
