Biar, Spain: Postman stored 20,000 undelivered letters at his home

The Civil Guard arrested a former postal worker in the town of Biar, Spain, following finding more than 20,000 undelivered letters in his home. The postman had worked on a temporary contract as a postal assistant between 2012 and 2013 – and apparently kept the mail with him instead of distributing it.

The case came to light when a builder who was renovating a recently purchased house in Biar found a large number of sealed letters. In the piles he discovered official correspondence and letters to private individuals who live in Alicante. The entrepreneur alerted the authorities.

Police investigations revealed that a 62-year-old man who had worked for the post office for a period of time had lived in the house until recently.

The letters found have now been confiscated by the Guardia Civil and handed over to the responsible judicial authority. The officials have now been able to find the postman’s new address: the man has been arrested and is facing charges of misappropriation of documents.
