After a meeting lasting several hours with China’s head of state Xi Jinping, US President Joe Biden sees “important progress” in the relationship between the two superpowers. The conversations were among the most constructive and productive he had with Xi, Biden wrote on Wednesday (local time) on the online platform X (formerly Twitter). Biden and Xi met at a property south of San Francisco. According to US government sources, the two spoke for four hours.

During the conversation, Biden was able to achieve his stated goal of resuming military communication between China and the USA. As Chinese state media reported, there will be working meetings between the two defense ministries again. It was also agreed to set up a working group to combat drug-related crime. According to a US government official, Biden and Xi also reached an agreement on the issue of fentanyl. Accordingly, China wants to take direct action against producers of the synthetic opioid, which is many times stronger than heroin and has led to a massive drug problem in the USA.

Of course, the major divergences between Washington and Beijing lie in the area of international politics, specifically the Ukraine war and the Taiwan crisis. What Biden and Xi discussed or even agreed to in this regard was not disclosed. Biden has reiterated several times in the past that the United States would provide military support to Taiwan in the event of Chinese aggression. While the USA supports Ukraine against Russian aggression, Moscow and Beijing are intensifying their political and economic cooperation.

The relationship between the US and China has long been very tense, including after economic sanctions against Beijing and political tensions surrounding Taiwan. Biden and Xi had not seen each other in person or spoken since the G20 summit in Bali in November 2022.
