US President Joe Biden has called on Israel to better protect hospitals in the Gaza Strip. According to media reports, Biden said on Monday in the White House that he hoped and expected that there would be less intense fighting in connection with hospitals. Biden also expressed hope for talks regarding the possible release of hostages.

In a press conference, his national security advisor Jake Sullivan also demanded that, in addition to better protection for hospitals, there must also be safe evacuation routes for those trapped there. Due to a lack of fuel, the largest clinic in the sealed-off coastal area, the Al-Shifa Hospital, recently stopped operations. According to eyewitnesses, thousands of people are still stuck in the facility, including hundreds of patients and many children.

There is heavy fighting in the immediate vicinity of the building. It is considered strategically important in Israel because the army suspects it to be the command center of the Islamist Hamas. Hamas and hospital staff deny the accusation. Israel recently stated that Al-Shifa Hospital was refusing to accept fuel. However, according to the clinic boss, the team feared that they would be shot at if they left the clinic.
