Washington (AFP) – US President Joe Biden pleaded on Wednesday to forge a great “partnership” with Africa, key to “success” for the world, before the leaders of 49 African countries meeting at a summit in Washington.

“When Africa succeeds, the United States succeeds. The whole world succeeds,” said the American president in a speech where he outlined a series of investments by the United States for the African continent.

The Biden administration intends to release 55 billion dollars for Africa within three years in areas as varied as digital, infrastructure, health or even in the fight against climate change.

“We cannot solve the challenges before us without leadership from Africa. I am not trying to be nice. That is a fact,” he continued.

“This partnership is not intended to create political obligations, to create dependence, but to stimulate shared successes and to create opportunity”, he further affirmed in this brief speech of about fifteen minutes.

He also welcomed the presence of Morocco at this stage of the competition, a first for an African nation.
