(Washington = Yonhap News) Correspondent Ryu Ji-bok = US President Joe Biden on the 8th (local time) voiced concerns about China’s military activity near Taiwan, but hoped that China would not take further action to escalate tensions.

President Biden met with reporters on a visit to Kentucky on the same day, saying he was not concerned about Taiwan, but was concerned about China’s move, according to the White House pool reporters.

“I don’t think they (China) will do anything more than they do now,” he said.

China has continued high-intensity armed protests surrounding Taiwan, firing missiles as well as mobilizing military aircraft and ships after US House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi visited Taiwan on the 2nd and 3rd.

China, which claims Taiwan as its territory, has declared that Pelosi’s visit to Taiwan is an interference in internal affairs and a violation of its sovereignty, and has also cut off some military dialogue channels with the United States and suspend cooperation on climate change.

However, the US has not changed its ‘one China’ policy and is urging China to stop military action, refusing to respond to China’s overreaction under the pretext of Chairman Pelosi’s visit.

When asked if he thought Pelosi’s visit to Taiwan was wise, Biden said, “It was his decision.”

From the standpoint of the administration of the United States, which is faithful to the principle of separation of powers, it is interpreted to mean that the visit of the head of the Congress to another country is not something to be debated about.

When the possibility of Pelosi’s visit to Taiwan was raised, President Biden said, “I don’t think the military is a good idea.”

On the same day, the Biden administration also criticized China’s military actions threatening Taiwan, along with voices calling for restraint.

“We are not seeking conflict anywhere,” Secretary of State Tony Blincoln, who is traveling to Africa, said at a press conference. It doesn’t help,” he said.

White House press secretary Karin Jean-Pierre also said at a press briefing that “We condemn China’s actions” and criticized China for not only being provocative but also increasing the risk of misjudgment.

Spokesperson Jean-Pierre said China was at odds with America’s long-standing goal of maintaining peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait.
