Sara Gilbert Reflects on ‘Big Bang Theory‘ Exit,Open to Spinoff Return
LOS ANGELES — Sara Gilbert, known for her role as the sardonic physicist Dr. Leslie Winkle on “The Big Bang Theory,” recently shed light on the reasons behind her character’s gradual disappearance from the hit sitcom. In an appearance on “The Official Big Bang theory Podcast,” Gilbert speculated that the writers might have encountered a creative impasse with Leslie, whose character arc often involved fleeting romantic entanglements.
“I think the writers kind of hit a wall with the character, probably also because she leaves these dynamics quickly,” Gilbert explained. “Then [it’s] kind of like, well, what do you do now? [Leslie’s] wired like that, and she left, and then there’s no more story there, really.”
gilbert’s Dr. Winkle, a Caltech experimental physicist, was introduced in the show’s first season as a foil to the main characters, especially Leonard Hofstadter (Johnny Galecki), with whom she shared a brief, sexually charged relationship. Her character, known for her sharp wit and intellectual competitiveness, appeared sporadically throughout the series’ run, spanning Seasons 1, 2, 3, and 9. Her final appearance was a cameo in the show’s 200th episode, “The Celebration Experimentation.”
Despite her character’s limited screen time, Gilbert expressed fondness for her time on the show. “It was a blast, and I like to work, so I’m always happy to show up,” she said.
asked about the possibility of appearing in the upcoming spinoff series, “Stuart Fails to Save the Universe,” Gilbert responded enthusiastically, “yeah, I would do more. I would have done more at the time.”
Executive producer Steve Molaro previously addressed leslie Winkle’s role in “The Big Bang Theory: the Definitive, inside Story of the Epic Hit Series,” noting that the character was conceived primarily as a love interest for Leonard and a means of adding female scientists to the show’s dynamic. Molaro emphasized that the writers never intended for Leslie to be a permanent fixture in Leonard’s life, as they always envisioned his eventual relationship with Penny (Kaley Cuoco).
“We wanted love interests for Leonard and were just looking for stories,” molaro said. “It was also a great way to add female scientists, because Leslie was at the university as well. And [series creator Chuck Lorre] had a history with Sara from ‘Roseanne’ [in which Gilbert and Galecki played love interests].”
“But we were never looking for a permanent, everlasting relationship for Leonard as we always thought he would date Penny on and off,” Molaro continued. “We weren’t looking to find a permanent girlfriend for him. We were adding characters and seeing what worked and what was leading to fun stories.”
“The Big Bang Theory,” created by Chuck Lorre and Bill Prady, aired for 12 seasons on CBS, becoming one of the most successful and beloved sitcoms in television history. The show followed the lives of a group of brilliant but socially awkward physicists and their interactions with their outgoing neighbor,Penny.
The upcoming spinoff, “Stuart Fails to Save the Universe,” will feature Stuart Bloom (Kevin Sussman) and Barry Kripke (John Ross Bowie). A premiere date has not yet been announced.

Archyde News Editor: Welcome, everyone, to Archyde News. Today, we have the pleasure of speaking with entertainment journalist, Eleanor Vance, to discuss the recent resurgence of interest in “The Big Bang Theory” and a particularly interesting discussion about Dr. Leslie Winkle with Sara Gilbert.
Eleanor Vance: Thank you for having me. It’s a pleasure to be here.
The Writer’s Room and the End of the Road for Dr. Winkle
Archyde News Editor: Sara Gilbert recently discussed her time on “The Big Bang Theory,” and particularly the creative decisions made surrounding her character, Dr. Leslie Winkle. From your perspective, Eleanor, how did the character’s initial introduction and subsequent exit contribute to the show’s overall narrative arc?
Eleanor Vance: From the insights available, and by speaking to my sources, Gilbert’s reflections on the character’s trajectory are quite insightful. It truly seems the writers, as she suggests, may have found themselves in a creative bind. Leslie was introduced primarily as a foil and a love interest, especially for leonard. Her sharp personality and intellectual competitiveness were great for the early seasons. But, as the show evolved, the dynamic with Leonard understandably shifted towards Penny. This shift created a natural conclusion, and the writers had to make the call that suited the story.
The Brief Flame and Lasting Impressions of Leslie Winkle
Archyde News Editor: Gilbert and the show’s executive producer, Steve Molaro, have both provided context for her character. Based on their recollections, how significant was Dr. Winkle’s impact on the show?
Eleanor Vance: While her appearances were sporadic, Dr. Winkle undoubtedly left a mark. She was a great reminder of the intellectual woman and this, without a doubt, opened othre avenues for the show itself. It was a key element to balance the male dominance that was perceived in the beginning of the show. It’s a good reminder of Gilbert’s strong acting and the show’s ability to create memorable characters, even in shorter arcs.
The Potential Return of dr. Winkle in ‘Stuart Fails to Save the Universe’
Archyde News Editor: News emerges that a spinoff series is on the horizon focusing of characters Stuart Bloom and Barry Kripke. is the character of Leslie Winkle, as hinted by Gilbert’s response, a possibility?
Eleanor Vance: Gilbert’s interest is certainly there. It shows the level of respect she has for the show and how much she enjoyed working in it, no matter how short her role was. Though the show’s focus leans more towards Stuart and Kripke, anything could happen if the writers and producers make the decision. Ultimately, it comes down to how well the story aligns with the existing characters and their potential return could create new storylines or revisit old ones. We will have to wait and see.
Reflections and Looking Ahead
Archyde News Editor: Considering the popularity of “The Big Bang Theory” and the anticipation surrounding the spinoff, what do you think viewers are most hoping to see in a potential return of Dr. Winkle?
Eleanor Vance: I think viewers would appreciate seeing a more developed Leslie winkle. Many found her character to be intriguing, and exploring her career or personal life more in-depth could bring an interesting, fresh perspective to the show. Her return in “Stuart Fails to Save the Universe” is a gamble. This is were the writers would need to think what role will Leslie play. Some are fans, others want to see her go, but that is to be seen in the future.
