“Channels” or “chaines” in French are now available on WhatsApp. They transform the messaging application into a real social network.
The new feature allows WhatsApp users to follow an account that offers a channel and view messages posted by the account owner in a separate section. In other words, it is a flow of messages, images and various publications similar to that of a profile page on a social network.
Like on like X or Facebook, it is possible to react to messages with comments or emojis.
Big advantage of the platform: channels is intended to be a confidential function. Impossible to know who follows a profile. Users will therefore not be able to “stalk” knowledge. The platform also allows channel administrators to refuse, without justification, that a user follows the content it produces.
Creating a channel is currently limited to certain users. Ultimately, however, any account should be able to open a channel.
For WhatsApp, this is a major launch. For the first time, the messaging application offers a real social function – outside of stories, which have never taken off on the platform. The way we use WhatsApp might therefore radically change in the future…
