Bilingual Summer Camp in Winston-Salem: Fun Activities to Learn Spanish and English

2023-06-06 07:00:00

Winston-Salem.- For children to make friends, learn away from the school format and practice their Spanish and English during the summer is the goal of the summer camp north of Winston-Salem.

Latino Community Services (LCS) is an agency that provides services in Spanish to the Latino community in Winston Salem and offers this bilingual activity for children.

The camp includes fun activities divided into 8 themes, the same number of weeks that the summer camp lasts.

“The reason for the bilingual program is because we have students who academically up to grade three are taking classes that are entirely in Spanish.

“And then there are other students who come to the same program but whose classes are entirely in English,” explains Odette Sánchez, executive director of LCS.

Hence, he adds, they designed this camp to help students strengthen their language.

After the strongest moment of Covid-19, in 2021 LCS held a camp to help children adapt to a new environment.

Now, Sánchez mentions, the idea is to continue but focusing on reading, so that the children read at the level of the school grade in which they are.

Each week there is a different theme, says Anita Galbraith, director of academic programs at LCS.

Art, agriculture, music, sports, international food, people who help us, spending time with the elderly, and goals for the coming year are the main themes for each one.

Children attending the camp will receive breakfast and lunch and are planned to take trips, such as to the Kaleideum North museum. And at the end of the program there will be a family day, adds Sánchez.

They plan to receive around 30 children of all ages, from 5 to 10 years old.

If you are interested, the deadline to register for the program is June 16. It is necessary to go to the LCS offices to do so, because there they receive the amount requested per family, which is $200.
