Bill Posey, former longtime congressman from Florida, dies at 78

Former U.S. Representative Bill Posey, a Republican who served Florida’s Space Coast for over a decade, has died at the age of 78. The announcement was made Sunday by Florida State Representative Mike Haridopolos.

Posey retired from Congress in January 2023, concluding a legislative career in the House of Representatives that began in 2009. During his tenure, he established himself as a primary advocate for the aerospace and defense industries, utilizing his seniority and position on the House Committee on Science, Space, and Technology to influence federal spending and policy.

His work focused heavily on the economic stability of Florida’s East Coast, specifically regarding the Kennedy Space Center and the surrounding infrastructure. Posey consistently pushed for the authorization of NASA programs and the integration of commercial space flight into the national security framework, ensuring the region remained a central hub for American orbital launches.

Originally representing Florida’s 8th district, Posey’s constituency shifted to the 9th district following the state’s redistricting process. His decision to retire last year ended a long-term Republican hold on the seat, which is currently held by Representative Byron Donalds.

Throughout his time in Washington, Posey aligned with the conservative wing of the Republican Party on fiscal matters and federal oversight, while maintaining a specialized focus on the technical and budgetary requirements of the Department of Defense and NASA.

Information regarding memorial services or official tributes from the House of Representatives has not yet been released.
