In the 1980s, Lauder served as the U.S. ambassador to Austria and as the Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for European and NATO policy under President Ronald Reagan. Domestically, his influence proved most potent in New York City. Following an unsuccessful mayoral bid in 1989, Lauder operated as a prominent kingmaker for Republican candidates and spent millions to sway ballot measures concerning term limits and voting rights.
