The Belgian Institute of Posts and Telecommunications (IBPT) has confirmed, at the end of its analysis, that the emission threshold of the iPhone 12 has been exceeded, reported Thursday the Secretary of State for Digitalization, Mathieu Michel (MR) , who received the said report. It will therefore request, as part of the safeguard procedure launched by France, the extension of the update proposed by its manufacturer Apple in France to the entire European territory.
In mid-September, following an analysis carried out by the National Frequency Agency (ANFR), France requested that the iPhone 12, released in 2020, be temporarily withdrawn from the market. The cause: exceeding the limit values on electromagnetic waves emitted and absorbed by the human body.
Mathieu Michel then asked BIPT to analyze the situation for Belgium. Several meetings with Apple and the Secretary of State were also organized to address the situation. A withdrawal of this device from the Belgian market is not necessary, he reassured.
The regulator’s report now confirms that the methodologies used in France comply with the European framework in force and that there is therefore no reason to call into question the results of the tests obtained there.
The apple brand had announced an update specific to French territory in order to comply with the tests carried out by the ANFR. This, which will be available on October 10, makes it possible to meet the standards mentioned, according to the Secretary of State. Mathieu Michel had requested that this same update be applied to European territory. However, the American company has not yet responded to this request, he deplores.
The ANFR also launched a “safeguard procedure” on Thursday, which aims to officially inform the European Commission and the member states on the situation encountered with the iPhone 12 and the measures that this authority has taken. As part of this procedure, Belgium will officially request that Apple’s response be applied to the entire territory of the European Union, warns Mathieu Michel.
“I see no reason which allows Apple to consider itself above European regulations. I therefore insistently await an adequate response from Apple so that it complies,” concludes the Secretary of State. .
