Bitcoin rose 42.7% in the third quarter of 2026 to reach $83,570 by September 30, driven primarily by U.S. spot exchange-traded funds that overtook corporate treasury accumulation as the market’s primary demand source, according to research from 21Shares.
The Bottom Line
- U.S. spot bitcoin ETFs added 79,800 bitcoin worth $6.2 billion in Q3 2026, nearly twice the 41,300 bitcoin newly mined during the period.
- Corporate treasury purchases dropped significantly from $7.1 billion in Q2 to roughly $1 billion in Q3, with Strategy adding only 1,700 bitcoin.
- Long-term holders reduced their balances by 248,000 bitcoin valued at $17.4 billion, while futures trading accounted for 88.2% of the quarter’s $4 trillion trading volume.
U.S. Spot ETFs Surpass Mining Supply
The third quarter brought a sharp reversal from the second quarter, when U.S. spot bitcoin ETFs recorded $4.8 billion in outflows. During Q3, those same funds added 79,800 bitcoin, representing $6.2 billion in capital inflows. This figure exceeded the 41,300 bitcoin worth $2.9 billion that were newly mined over the same period, 21Shares reported.
Demand, however, was heavily concentrated. Data cited by 21Shares showed that 91% of total third-quarter ETF inflows measured in bitcoin occurred during two brief windows: August 17-27 and September 21-25. Alongside ETF accumulation, treasury companies added approximately 12,000 bitcoin worth $1.0 billion, bringing combined ETF and treasury buying to $7.2 billion.
| Market Participant | Q3 2026 Flow (Bitcoin) | Q3 2026 Flow (Dollars) |
|---|---|---|
| US Spot ETFs | +79,800 | +$6.2 billion |
| Treasury Companies | +12,000 | +$1.0 billion |
| Newly Mined Supply | +41,300 | +$2.9 billion |
| Long-Term Holders | -248,000 | -$17.4 billion |
Corporate Treasury Buying Slows Down
While institutional participation through ETFs expanded, corporate entities holding bitcoin on their balance sheets pulled back. Treasury company purchases fell from $7.1 billion in Q2 to roughly $1 billion in Q3, as reported by Crypto-Economy. Strategy added only 1,700 bitcoin valued at approximately $240 million, following sales of $349 million during July and August.
At the same time, long-term holders—defined as wallets with coins unmoved for more than 155 days—liquidated 248,000 bitcoin worth $17.4 billion. This selling pressure was nearly three times the volume absorbed by ETFs. Even so, investors realized $9.3 billion in net profits during the quarter, marking the first quarterly net gain of 2026 following $61.6 billion in net realized losses during the first half of the year.
Miner Economics and Onchain Activity Shifts
On the mining front, September revenue exceeded estimated total mining costs by 6%, ending a 10-month stretch below break-even, according to Phemex. However, transaction fees covered only 0.67% of the network’s $2.96 billion quarterly security cost, leaving the security budget reliant on newly issued supply.

Activity across the blockchain presented a mixed environment. While transaction counts increased 46.8% year-over-year to 62.06 million, adjusted transfer value fell 48.7% to $1.16 trillion. Futures trading dominated market volume, accounting for 88.2% of the $4 trillion traded in Q3, while spot volume contracted 23% quarter-on-quarter to $470 billion.
