Black Drag Show Sparks Political Divide

Oregon House Hosts Black Drag Performance for Pride Month, Sparks Debate

Salem, Ore. – A Black drag performance took center stage at the Oregon House on Wednesday, igniting a mix of reactions from state representatives. This event, held in celebration of Pride Month, has stirred discussions around appropriate conduct within the legislative chambers and the recognition of diverse cultural contributions.

Black Drag Queens Take the Stage

The House floor became a vibrant stage as Isaiah Esquire and Aqua Flora, two prominent Black drag performers, danced through the aisles, officially commencing Wednesday’s session. Numerous Democratic representatives were seen clapping and cheering, visibly enjoying the performance.

Speaker Pro Tempore David Gomberg, a Democrat representing District 10, acknowledged the unusual nature of the event. “Normally, colleagues, we don’t applaud during performances,” Gomberg stated, “but ther are times when I think exceptions are appropriate.”

Representative Nelson’s Resolution

State Representative Travis Nelson, a Democrat from Northeast Portland and the first openly LGBTQ+ African American member of the House, was the force behind the invitation. Nelson is the sponsor of House Concurrent Resolution 3, a measure designed to honor the historical significance of Black drag within the state of Oregon.

Nelson explained that his motivation stemmed from a desire to spotlight the artistic and cultural contributions of Black drag queens in Oregon, particularly during Pride Month. Although he initially proposed the resolution in February during Black History Month, scheduling conflicts prevented its earlier presentation.

“This resolution was something that was really vital for me,” nelson emphasized. “We do a lot of resolutions in this building. Rarely do we ever acknowledge the contributions of folks from the LGBTQ community, and I’ve never known any legislature in the country to recognize the contributions of drag queens.”

Mixed Reactions and a Divisive Vote

The performance concluded with a standing ovation from many lawmakers present. Tho, Republican Representative Cyrus javadi, representing District 32, remained seated at his desk throughout the performance. Despite this, Javadi voiced support for the spirit of the resolution following the performance.

“I support the spirit of this resolution because it affirms that no matter who you are, or what you believe, you matter and you’re welcome here,” Javadi said.

Other republican members either left the chamber or positioned themselves at the back of the room during the performance. When the resolution was put to a vote, it passed with a 34-9 margin. All dissenting votes came from Republicans, except for Representatives Javadi and Kevin Mannix (R-District 21).

House Minority Leader Representative Christine Drazan (R-Canby) issued a formal statement criticizing the event:

Yesterday’s ill-advised performance broke our chamber protocols and standards for opening ceremonies in the Oregon House of Representatives. Turning the House Floor into a smokey bar is beneath the dignity of this body. Opening ceremonies are not the time or place for ostentatious displays of political symbols and social activism.

State Representative dwayne Yunker (R-Grants Pass) also voiced strong opposition, asserting via social media that the performance was “a complete waste of taxpayer money.”

“I’m not sure the Founding Fathers envisioned taxpayer-funded legislative chambers being turned into platforms for political theater. The House floor is meant for serious debate, lawmaking, and serving all Oregonians, not partisan spectacles designed to push cultural agendas,” Yunker posted.

However, Representative Nelson dismissed the notion that taxpayer funds were involved, clarifying that performers participating in opening ceremonies do so without compensation from the Oregon legislature.

“I don’t know where that was coming from. There was no taxpayer money associated with this,” Nelson stated.

Yunker issued the following statement :

The Democrats’ stunt yesterday-staging a salacious drag performance in front of children in the gallery of our beatiful House chamber-was an embarrassing display of political theater that disrespected the dignity of the institution and the seriousness of the work oregonians expect us to do.

Differing Perspectives

Nelson shared that two Republican colleagues privately expressed their respect for the performers’ right to perform but conveyed their moral opposition to the performance taking place within the chamber.

“It’s really sad to me that in 2025 we still have folks who do not see the value, do not see the contribution that folks from the LGBTQ community make to our state,” Nelson lamented.

Nelson countered the criticism regarding wasted time by pointing out that lawmakers had recently spent nearly an hour debating the designation of the T-bone steak as the official steak of Oregon,an issue that did not elicit similar backlash.

Controversies in Context: drag Performances and Public Spaces

The debate surrounding the Black drag performance in the Oregon House reflects broader national conversations about the appropriateness of drag performances in public settings, especially in the presence of children. While supporters emphasize freedom of expression and the celebration of LGBTQ+ culture, critics raise concerns about the sexualization of performances and their potential impact on young audiences.

As of this year, several states have considered or enacted legislation restricting drag performances, particularly in areas accessible to minors. These laws often face legal challenges, with courts weighing the balance between protecting artistic expression and safeguarding children.

How do you feel about drag performances in public spaces? should there be stricter regulations on such performances, or should freedom of expression be prioritized?

The Broader Impact: Portrayal and Inclusivity

The event also underscores the ongoing push for greater representation and inclusivity within legislative bodies. Representative Nelson’s presence as the first openly LGBTQ+ African American member of the Oregon House highlights progress in diversifying political representation. However, the varied reactions to the drag performance demonstrate that there is still work to be done in fostering understanding and acceptance of LGBTQ+ culture within the political sphere.

Viewpoint Arguments
Supporters Celebrate LGBTQ+ culture, freedom of expression, and the importance of representation.
Critics Raise concerns about chamber protocols, potential sexualization, and the use of taxpayer money (even though refuted in this case).
