“Blaga’s Lessons” Wins Top Prize at 57th International Film Festival in Karlovy Vary, Czech Republic

The main prize at the 57th International Film Festival in Karlsbad, Czech Republic (Karlovy Vary) this year goes to a Bulgarian-German co-production. At the closing gala on Saturday evening, director Stefan Komandarev accepted the crystal globe for his film, which translates as “Blaga’s Lessons”. In addition, the leading actress Eli Skorchewa was voted best actress.

The film is about the retired teacher Blaga, who falls victim to a telephone scam and loses all her savings. In order to give her recently deceased husband a dignified burial, she has to resort to immoral means herself. The main prize is worth 25,000 US dollars, the equivalent of around 22,800 euros.

The film festival in Karlsbad (Karlovy Vary) in the Czech Republic is one of the oldest in the world. It transforms the West Bohemian spa resort into a party stronghold for a few days every summer. According to the organizers, more than 123,500 tickets for 445 film screenings were sold this year.

The US actress Robin Wright provided Hollywood glamor at the end. The “House of Cards” star accepted the festival president’s honorary award. Already at the opening, “Gladiator” star Russell Crowe was honored with the crystal globe for extraordinary services to world cinema.

The jury’s special prize went to the German-Iranian film drama “Empty Networks” by filmmaker Behrooz Karamizade. In it, the young Amir sets out to find money for the bride price in order to be able to marry his girlfriend Narges, who comes from a better background than he does. The special prize is endowed with 15,000 US dollars (around 13,700 euros).
