Tánaiste and Minister for Foreign Affairs Simon Harris strongly condemned recent comments by former US President Donald trump that Ukraine “should never have started” teh war with Russia, calling them “revisionism on speed.”
“the reality here is there’s only been one aggressor in relation to this brutal, illegal invasion and that is Vladimir putin, who took a decision to invade a peaceful neighbouring country on the continent of europe,” Harris stated on RTÉ’s News At One,emphasizing that Ireland and the European Union stand in solidarity with Ukraine.
While acknowledging Trump’s desire for peace, Harris stressed the importance of a peace process that respects Ukraine’s sovereignty. “Any peace process has to absolutely be on the terms of Ukraine, in terms of recognising that they are the sovereign nation that was invaded,” he asserted.
Harris clarified that Ireland doesn’t rule out potential peacekeeping duties in Ukraine in the future but believes any peace process is currently non-existent. “This is not about two neighbours having a bit of a dispute. This is about one sovereign country in Europe that has been brutally invaded by Russia,” he emphasized.
Regarding a potential visit to the White House, Harris confirmed there haven’t been any formal invitations yet, but anticipates one closer to March. He noted that Ireland continues to work with democratically elected leaders and had congratulated Trump after his 2020 election victory.
Harris’s statement underscores Ireland’s unwavering support for Ukraine and its commitment to a peaceful resolution based on Ukrainian sovereignty. The recent controversy surrounding Trump’s remarks highlights the ongoing global debate about the intricacies of the conflict and the complexities surrounding peace negotiations.
