Blizzard has revealed that the positive community response to its 2023 experimental game mode, Season of Discovery, was the key factor that led to the development and release of World of Warcraft Forever. In an interview with Bloomberg, Blizzard senior game designer Josh Greenfield explained that the idea for WoW Forever had been considered since before the release of World of Warcraft Classic in 2019, but the team initially opted for a direct port of Vanilla WoW instead.
While Forever was put on hold, the Classic team began experimenting with more radical changes as the original game aged. This led to the 2023 launch of Season of Discovery, which introduced significant modifications such as ability gems and the conversion of 5-player dungeons like Blackfathom Deeps into full-scale raids. According to Greenfield, it was the community’s reaction to Season of Discovery that reignited the conversation within the company about creating a permanent “Classic+” version of the game.

The Spark from Season of Discovery
Greenfield told Bloomberg, That’s really when the conversation started around, ‘Hey, what does a permanent version of this game look like?’
The success of Season of Discovery not only prompted internal discussions but also helped convince Blizzard’s leadership to approve the development of Forever. This experimental game mode also had an immediate impact on other versions of World of Warcraft, influencing the release of content like Mists of Pandaria Remix in 2024 and Legion Remix in 2025.
From Concept to Launch
Once development on WoW Forever was given the green light, the team began integrating new graphics engines. A technical demonstration using Northshire Abbey reportedly won over nearly everyone at Blizzard, helping to move the project forward. The game launched earlier this week to a positive reception, with IGN’s early review praising the experience, and a launch that was notably smooth thanks to Blizzard’s investment in approximately 200TB of server memory.
Players Respond Positively to Game Launch
Players have responded enthusiastically to World of Warcraft Forever, particularly impressed by the stable launch. IGN reviewer Len Hafer noted, [Blizzard] made me believe I can go home again – and that home is somewhere I want to spend more time, with new surprises to discover.
Let’s see if they can keep it up for 47 more levels.
