Auto industry executives have repeatedly complained that electric cars are not as profitable as their combustion engine counterparts; But Oliver Zipes, chief executive of BMW, says those days are over.
Zipes said today, Saturday, that all new electric cars from “BMW” are profitable, and the “New Class” battery-powered model produced by the company, which is scheduled to be put on the market from 2025, will be more profitable.
“The assumption that the gains from combustion-engined cars are always higher is simply wrong,” Zeps told reporters at an event ahead of the IAA auto show in Munich.
“BMW” revealed earlier today, Saturday, the first prototype of the future “Neue Klasse” model, which aims to help the German automaker to compete with “Tesla” and enhance its sales in its most important market, which is China.
Zipes said the luxury automaker is growing in China, selling twice as many fully electric cars combined as its two rival brands, Mercedes-Benz and Audi. He added that BMW is not affected by the price war in the country due to its distinguished position in the sector.
“We have a solid foundation in the Chinese market,” the CEO said, in a separate interview with Bloomberg Television. “It will never be just an issue of sales volume just to increase it, because we don’t need that.”
