BMW’s chameleon car

BMW recently unveiled the i Vision Dee, its new color-changing car model. It is a prototype with several digital features, including the projection of driving data inside the windshield.

The presentation of the German brand’s i Vision Dee took place during the Las Vegas Consumer Electronics Show. For your information, BMW unveiled its black and gray color-changing car model last year.

i Vision Dee: we will have to wait another two years

The BMW i Vision Dee has a body that can change color like a rainbow, with a solid color, in checks or stripes. The brand claimed that this is just an ongoing project. But in the years to come, it could be the design of the future for luxury car manufacturers.

And still according to the German manufacturer, the projection of driving data onto the windshield should only exist within 2 years, i.e. in 2025. Otherwise, BMW also added that it is possible VR or virtual reality images on the windshield cars of the future. The idea is then to be able to combine the real world and the virtual world. We will therefore have to witness the appearance of a new companion for a better driving experience according to Oliver Zipse, the head of BMW.

According to him, it is simply a prototype. But the group plans in the meantime to integrate new technologies gradually.

The pride of technology with the BMW i Vision Dee

BMW’s i Vision Dee gives pride of place to digital technologies. The driving data that can be displayed on the windshield gathers all the information that can be useful for the driver. In particular the speed, the GPS guidance information, or the limits in force.

On the color side, BMW’s new chameleon car has a body that can change colors under 32 different shades. And the display of colors can be uniform, striped or checkered. In other words, BMW has this time opted for a larger color palette than that of the model it unveiled last year at the CES (Consumer Electronics Show).

We are indeed talking about a fully customizable body. And BMW had to resort to technology ePaper to get this color variation. And for the management of the bodywork, we are witnessing a management by electronic unit which comes from E Ink.

From myth to reality

It was in the presence of the Governor of California and former actor that BMW unveiled the i Vision Dee. According to him, in his films, machines were the enemy of man. “This BMW project scares me a little because in my films, in Terminator in particular, we were fighting against machines from the future. Today, the fact that the German group is launching this prototype reassures me. I think that today we can reassure ourselves that we can see that a new era is dawning,” he added.
