A boat sank in the Scheldt, reports the Newspaper. Three people (who were not injured) had to be evacuated, police confirm.
The incident occurred around midday on a section of the Scheldt between Merelbeke and De Pinte. It is not yet clear why the ship got into difficulty, but there was a spill of a large quantity of fuel oil and several tonnes of gravel into the Scheldt.
It is not yet known whether this was a collision or a technical fault. An investigation has been opened. Specialist divers were hired to examine the damaged vessel.
