Hedgerows are managed linear woodland elements whose structure varies over time. Within the bocage networks, leveling and replanting generate changes on a ten-year scale.
On a functional level, hedges and hedgerows play an important role in the dynamics of various forms of biodiversity and the physical states of landscapes: climate, hydrology, soil. These functions provide very varied ecosystem services which are all means of managing natural resources useful to agriculture and society in general.
This article presents the main characteristics of hedgerows and hedges, both structurally and functionally. It addresses the general principles of action at the level of agricultural holdings and within the framework of public action in the territories.
