Bodies of Belgian Climbers Missing Since 1992 Found in Swiss Alps After Glacier Melts

The remains of two Belgian mountaineers who vanished in the Swiss Alps on Sept. 4, 1992, were finally recovered on July 26, 2026, after emerging from the retreating Trift glacier in Saas-Grund, Valais, according to the Valais Cantonal Police.

Decoding the Trift Glacier’s Decades-Long Freeze

On July 26, 2026, an alpine recovery operation retrieved two sets of human remains on the territory of the Saas-Grund municipality in Valais, Switzerland. The deployment came as a direct consequence of ice loss, which exposed the site on the Trift glacier.

According to a statement released by the Valais Cantonal Police on Wednesday, August 19, 2026, direct DNA profile comparisons established conclusively that the deceased were the two Belgian climbers reported missing in the Weissmies region since 1992. The victims were aged 39 and 41 at the time of their disappearance.

The Fatal 1992 Ascent of Weissmies

The tragic sequence began on Sept. 4, 1992. The two men departed from the Weissmies hut intent on summiting the 4,017-meter-high Weissmies and traversing toward the Almagell hut. Heavy, deteriorating weather conditions ambushed the climbers mid-route, preventing them from reaching their destination.

Extensive search operations were launched in the months following their disappearance. While search teams managed to locate a backpack belonging to the men during subsequent sweeps, the mountaineers were not found until last month.

The Rising Frequency of Glacial Discoveries in Valais

The Valais Cantonal Police maintain a missing persons registry recording reports since 1925, primarily comprising individuals lost in high-mountain terrain or alpine waterways.

As glaciers recede, the ice is gradually yielding remains. According to the Valais Cantonal Police, it happens that the remains of individuals lost in the mountains several decades prior are brought to the surface as glacial masses recede.
