An intensive search operation across the rugged terrain of southeastern Spain reached a grim turning point on Thursday afternoon. A member of the Didugal Search and Rescue Canine Unit, operating under the Civil Protection department of Olula del Río, discovered a dead body in the Almería municipality of Serón while looking for a man who had vanished from Baza, Granada.
The Breakthrough in an Almond Grove
The discovery occurred at approximately 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, according to Europa Press.
Vicente, a member of the Didugal canine unit, was sweeping one of the small areas that still remained to be reviewed. Accompanied by his search dog, he moved through a field of almond trees toward a toolshed.
At that specific location, the dog locked onto a scent trail, guiding the handler to a point where Vicente spotted what appeared to be a body. Recognizing the state of deterioration of the body, Vicente alerted his colleagues to provide support while waiting for police and emergency services to arrive.
An Abandoned Vehicle and Weeks of Heat
National Police records indicate that his disappearance was reported on July 25.
Crucially, the missing man’s vehicle was discovered in the Serón municipal district on the afternoon of the same day he disappeared. That vehicle recovery led to centering part of the search efforts in the municipality.
Because of high temperatures, the canine unit had to conduct their operations in intermittent shifts, limiting fieldwork to the early morning or late evening. Their search was planned using information gathered from local residents and police services.
Forensic Medical Examinations Awaited
Authorities have emphasized that formal identification remains impossible at this stage. The state of deterioration of the recovered remains means that identity confirmation will rely on forensic medical examinations to determine if the remains belong to the missing man.
As investigators piece together the final movements of the missing Baza resident, the focus now shifts from the field operations of Civil Protection volunteers to the scientific rigor of the coroner’s office. The results of these forensic tests are expected to provide definitive answers.
