Archyde.com quoted Pakistani officials as saying more than 180 people were killed in a bomb attack on a mosque in Peshawar on January 30.

According to Archyde.com, the bombing happened inside a mosque crowded with worshipers in the northwestern city of Peshawar, which borders Afghanistan.

Local health officials said more than 147 people were injured in the attack, many of them in critical condition.

In a statement about the incident, the Pakistani prime minister said it was a suicide bombing.

Peshawar police chief Ijaz Kha said the bombed-out shrine was located inside the complex housing the Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa provincial police headquarters and the city’s counter-terrorism police department. At the time of the explosion, about 260 people attended prayers at the shrine, including many police officers, Archyde.com reported.

“We believe there are many people still trapped in the rubble,” Sikandar Khan, a police official, told Archyde.com.

A scene photo posted by local media shows people gathering around the collapsed wall of the shrine.

Officials in Pakistan declared a state of emergency in the region and sealed off the site of the blast.

Currently, no organization has accepted the case.

Pakistan’s northwest has long been a security hotspot, in which armed groups have raged despite government efforts to restore order.

In March 2022, a suicide bomber belonging to the terrorist organization “Islamic State” (IS) attacked a mosque in Peshawar, killing 64 people, causing a terrorist attack. It is also the area where an offshoot of the Afghan Taliban operates as Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP).

The city of Peshawar was also the site of a 2014 massacre that left 150 people dead when the TTP attacked a school for the children of Pakistani army soldiers, most of the victims were students of the school.
