Chinese President Xi Jinping stressed today, Wednesday, that Russia and China should raise the level of economic, trade and investment cooperation between them.

China Central Television quoted Xi as saying during a meeting with Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin in Beijing: “The two sides should continue to identify all potential opportunities for cooperation, raise the level of trade, economic and investment cooperation, improve the systems and mechanisms of bilateral cooperation, and strengthen and expand the foundations of cooperation in China.” energy field, mutual communication and the creation of new factors for growth.

The Chinese president stressed the need to “expand the scale of humanitarian exchanges between the two countries, to make new progress in the development of people-to-people relations.”

According to Chinese customs, trade between Russia and China grew by 29.3% in 2022; to a record high of $190.271 billion.

During this period, China exported goods to Russia worth $76.122 billion, an increase of 12.8% compared to 2021; Shipments from Russia to China increased by 43.4%, reaching $114.149 billion.

In the context, Russian Prime Minister Mishustin signed a package of agreements with China today, Wednesday, during a visit to Beijing.

Mishustin said that bilateral relations between the two countries have risen to an unprecedented level.

Mishustin held talks with the Chinese president and Premier Li Qiang.

“Today, relations between Russia and China have risen to an unprecedented level,” Mishustin told his Chinese counterpart at their meeting.

He added, “The two countries are characterized by mutual respect for each other’s interests and the desire to jointly respond to challenges related to the growing turmoil at the international level and the pressure of illegal sanctions imposed by the West.”

He continued, “As our Chinese friends say, unity makes it possible to move mountains.”

The memoranda of understanding signed by the two countries included an agreement to enhance investment cooperation in commercial services, an agreement on exporting agricultural products to China, and another agreement on sports cooperation.

Russia’s Interfax news agency reported that Russian energy shipments to China are expected to increase by 40 percent this year, adding that the two countries are discussing the export of technological equipment to Russia.

Last March, the Chinese president visited Russia and held talks with his Russian counterpart after the two countries concluded a “borderless” partnership agreement.

The Chinese president said from Moscow: “My visit is a new impetus for the development of relations with Russia.”

Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu said earlier that “relations between Moscow and Beijing have become a pillar of global stability, and have reached an unprecedented level.”

Beijing rejected Western attempts to link its partnership with Moscow to Ukraine, insisting that the relationship between the two countries does not violate international norms and that China has the right to cooperate with any country it chooses. It stresses that cooperation between them does not target any third country.
