Bordeaux after cooking?

2023-11-02 10:36:16

What will be the fate of the Bordeaux vineyards, the largest in France? The one whose name alone is an international brand, would he have rested on his laurels? Assailed by geopolitical and health crises and a global decline in red wine consumption, the Bordeaux vineyards today find themselves uprooting part of their vines in an attempt to escape overproduction.

For two days, 20 Minutes went on a reporting trip to meet wine growers and industry players. Asked to adapt its vineyards to climate change and new consumer tastes, how will Bordeaux produce tomorrow? At what price and according to what commercial strategy? Will these changes in methods have consequences on the taste of Bordeaux wine?

In this first of four episodes of our podcast series “Les Pépins du bordeaux”, we return to the root of these crises which do not affect all Bordeaux wines. It targets, in particular, those who sell red wine in bulk, more entry-level.

At the end of 2022, some of these “bulkheads” invaded the chic streets of downtown Bordeaux to express their distress at not making a decent living from their work. With sales prices below cost, they say they can no longer get by. The Viti33 collective campaigned for the uprooting of part of the vineyard, to remedy the overproduction crisis. This situation invites the entire sector to question itself. Good listening !
