  • The governor and the US government are at loggerheads.

  • It’s about securing the border with Mexico.

  • Now the National Guard and the Border Police face each other.

Joe Biden’s administration and Republican Gov. Gregg Abbott, a supporter of former President Donald Trump, have long argued over securing the U.S.-Mexico border. Abbott accuses the government in Washington of doing nothing to stop illegal border crossings.

And the domestic political situation continues to deteriorate. US media are already throwing the term “civil war” around, stoking fears of a civil war. This comes after the Border Patrol and the National Guard face off at Shelby Park in Texas on the border with Mexico.

It is actually the job of the US Border Patrol (USBP) to ensure security. But earlier this month, Texas authorized its National Guard to take over the riverside park. Since then, troops have again put up barbed wire and fences. The government in Washington DC called on Texas to immediately reverse this. Other states had also previously deployed their National Guard or were considering deployment. Oklahoma Governor Kevin Stitt spoke of a “powder keg full of tensions”.

Abbott has spent more than ten billion US dollars (8.64 billion francs at the current rate) in the last three years to prevent hundreds of thousands of migrants from Mexico and Central America from crossing the border. Now the US government is allowed to do so following a decision by the Supreme Court Remove barbed wire erected by Abbott. On Thursday, 25 Republican governors expressed solidarity with Abbott. Months ago, several Republican-controlled states began sending personnel and resources to the border in Texas to support Abbott.
