Boris Johnson on East Germany: What he means by his comparison

Dhe Prime Minister said: “31 years since reunification, GDP per capita in the north-east of our country, in areas like Yorkshire, the East Midlands, Wales and Northern Ireland, is lower than in the former East Germany.”

Johnson’s intention to show how extreme the regional economic differences are in his country is part of his ambitious “leveling-up” plan, which his Conservative Party had promised in its 2019 election manifesto.
