History

BOSTON – The Boston University field hockey team closed out its regular season on Saturday afternoon with a 2-0 loss to American at New Balance Field on Senior Day.

The visiting Eagles scored in the second and third quarters to complete a perfect 6-0 Patriot League campaign.

BU, which got a 10-save performance from senior Kate Thomason, finishes the regular season with a record of 8-9, including a 3-3 PL mark, and will be the No. 3 seed in next week’s conference tournament.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Terriers got off to a strong start and held a 4-1 shot advantage in what was a scoreless opening quarter.
BU earned the first three corners of the contest but was unable to capitalize on them.
The Eagles’ first good chance came in the 23rd minute when they were awarded a penalty stroke but Charllene Boshoff’s attempt went off the right post.
Soon after, American earned three corners in the span of the minute and scored on the last one to open the scoring.
After inserting the ball, Megan Hoffman took a pass from Tayla-Jade Weiss on the left side and send an elevated shot that went off BU netminder Kate Thomason and in at the 26:21 mark.
The Eagles earned yet another penalty stroke in the early stages of the second half but Thomason was up to the task, knocking away Boshoff’s attempt and keeping it a one-goal game.
However, the visitors scored soon after as a defensive miscue allowed the Eagles to attack two-on-none and Kaleigh Missimer redirected a pass from Emilia Winkler in the 33rd minute for a 2-0 lead.
BU forced American goalkeeper Bryn Underwood to make three saves late in the third quarter.
The Terriers’ last corner of the contest came in the 53rd minute but the ensuing shot was wide of the cage.

GAME NOTES

Shots were fairly even for the vast majority of the contest until the final minutes as American had a late flurry to finish with a 16-10 shot advantage.
The Eagles earned seven corners while allowing four.
Underwood stopped all five shots on goal to pick up the shutout in goal for American.
