NBA – Eligible for a re-signing in New Orleans, Brandon Ingram should not begin discussions with his leaders before the summer of 2024.
Coming out of an international experience that he saw as a springboard but where he rather disappointed with Team USA at the World Cup (5.7 points, 3.0 rebounds, 2.7 assists), Brandon Ingram is preparing to experience a pivotal season with the Pelicans.
Already, because he will have to perform and stay in shape to help his team get back to the playoffs. Then, because his individual (and collective) performances will likely have repercussions on his future new contract.
For now, the 26-year-old is still linked to New Orleans for the next two years, earning $33.8 million in 2023/24 then $36 million in 2024/25. Except that he has the possibility of extending in Louisiana before the start of the regular season.
On the way to the “supermax”?
According to NOLA.com, however, this does not take the path, since Brandon Ingram should wait until the summer of 2024 to initiate discussions with his leaders. Decision motivated by the fact that he could receive a lot more money in a year…
Provided that the Pelicans winger shines individually because, in the event of selection in an All-NBA in 2023/24, he will become eligible for a “supermax” type extension (i.e. 35% of the salary cap of its franchise). To do this, Brandon Ingram will have to reach the mark of 65 games played
next season, something he has only done once in his career. That was in 2016/17, during his rookie year (79 games), but without the shortened campaigns of 2019/20 and 2020/21, he probably would have bettered that total.
Arriving in New Orleans four years ago now, as part of Anthony Davis’ transfer to the Lakers, the 2020 MIP currently remains eligible for a three-year contract extension, and around $147 million. In the event of a “supermax”, he could re-sign for five years and nearly 300 million dollars…
Good news for Brandon Ingram: he is coming off the best season of his career, averaging 24.7 points, 5.8 assists and 5.5 rebounds in 2022/23 (48% shooting, 39% 3-point shooting and 88% shooting) .
