Brave Act of Algerian Resident Saving Elderly Lady in Meuse River Earns Recognition Medal

The municipal council of Liège awarded, on Monday, the medal of recognition of the City of Liège to Nadir Bechekat, a young Algerian resident illegally, for his act of bravery towards an elderly lady who fell into the Meuse, on the 26 May 2023.

The events occurred at the Quai du Roi Albert in Bressoux. The young man was sitting on a bench when he saw the lady fall into the water. Listening only to his courage, he jumped into the water to help the victim, risking his life knowing that the current in the Meuse can be strong and unexpected. Despite the difficult conditions, he managed to return to the bank with the victim and kept her out of the water until help arrived.

The scene was filmed and circulated widely on social networks. Very quickly, this young Algerian, in an irregular situation in Belgium, was presented as a hero. This Monday, he was awarded the recognition medal from the City of Liège. Not expressing himself very well in French, probably also under the influence of emotion, he thanked the municipal council and wished happiness to the Belgian people.
