Brazil defeated Argentina 5–4 on penalties after a 1–1 draw at Arena Niterói in Rio de Janeiro state on Friday, advancing to the final of the 2026 Futsal Finalissima against Spain.
The semifinal clash brought together two titans of the sport in front of a packed local crowd. Brazil’s number 10, Pito, broke the deadlock by scoring in the second stage of the match. Argentina answered swiftly when Trípodi leveled the score during regulation time.
When the final whistle sounded with the score deadlocked at 1–1, the match went straight to a penalty shootout. João Victor, Rocha, Marcel, Dyego, and Fabinho all converted their spot-kicks for Brazil. Argentina matched them through successful attempts from Bolo, Praça, Claudino, and Rosa against Brazilian goalkeeper Willian. However, Trípodi hit the crossbar with his penalty, sealing the outcome and pushing the hosts through.
Following the match, Pito spoke about the intense nature of the rivalry and the challenge ahead. “It was a very tough match. That’s how Brazil vs. Argentina games are,” Pito said in an interview. “Now we need to rest because we have a strong Spanish team to face in the final.”
The Road to the Title Match
Brazil and Argentina share a long and fiercely contested history on the futsal pitch. Coach Marquinhos Xavier’s squad has maintained the upper hand in recent encounters, claiming victories over Argentina in both the 2024 and 2026 Copa América finals, as well as the 2024 World Cup final.
Meanwhile, UEFA reports that Spain secured their place in the final by defeating Portugal 8–7 on penalties after a 2–2 draw. Portugal, the inaugural 2022 tournament champions, led 2–1 late in the match before Sergio González equalized for Spain just 55 seconds before the final whistle. The subsequent penalty shootout required nine kicks for each side before Spain prevailed.

The Final Showdown at Arena Niterói
The tournament now culminates in a clash between two historic global powers. Between them, Brazil and Spain have claimed eight of the ten FIFA Futsal World Cups. Brazil holds six titles, having won the 1996, 2008, and 2012 meetings, while Spain claimed the first of their two global titles in 2000 to dethrone Sunday’s opponents.
