Brazil will have a laboratory to tackle pandemics in partnership with Germany

The Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation reached an agreement last Monday (4) with the Robert Koch Institute, from Germany, to establish a maximum biological containment laboratory called Orion (NB4). The laboratory will be built at the National Center for Research in Energy and Materials, in Campinas, in the interior of São Paulo, with the aim of facing possible pandemics.

The partnership covers the entire process, from planning to laboratory operation, with an emphasis on research and exchange opportunities. The Minister of Health, Nísia Trindade, highlighted that this initiative strengthens the Ministry of Health’s strategy to deal with future pandemics, emphasizing the need to be prepared with comprehensive knowledge and advanced technology.

The Ministry’s statement highlights that Orion will be the only laboratory in the world connected to a synchrotron light source, used to investigate the composition and structure of matter. The construction of the laboratory It is part of the New Growth Acceleration Program, with a planned investment of R$1 billion by 2026.

The general director of CNPEM, Antonio José Roque da Silva, emphasized the importance of the partnership not only for the development of the Orion project, but also for the mobility and training of researchers, in addition to joint research in the area of ​​health, diagnosis and development of vaccines. This collaboration is highlighted in the face of current challenges, such as climate change, migratory movements and inequalities in access to healthcare.
