Brazil will lead the campaign for the admission of the Palestinian State to the UN – Jornal OPaís

Brazil will join other states in the campaign to get Palestine admitted as a full member of the United Nations according to a meeting, this Sunday (17), between foreign ministers Mauro Vieira, from Brazil, and Riyadh al-Maliki, from Palestine

The head of Brazilian diplomacy, Mauro Vieira, arrived yesterday morning in Ramallah, in the West Bank, for talks in defense of a ceasefire and the creation and recognition of a Palestinian state since since 2012 Palestinians have had observer status at the UN — which allows its diplomats to participate in debates, but without the right to vote.

The biggest obstacle, however, is still the US veto power in the UN Security Council (UNSC).

In the wake of the latest events involving the Israel-Hamas war, Palestinian authorities want to launch a formal request for full membership in the United Nations in 2024, especially given the risk that the war in Gaza will pave the way for new land invasions by of Israelis, according to UOL.

In the West Bank alone, there are more than 700 checkpoints that increase tension and control over Palestinian cities.

For Itamaraty, Palestine’s accession as a full member is an important step towards ensuring that a peace agreement is explicitly established together with the creation of two states — Palestinian and Israeli —, with their borders internationally recognized.

According to Itamaraty, “he [al-Maliki] described the extreme gravity of the humanitarian situation in Gaza and highlighted President Lula’s courageous role in defending Palestine and Palestinians”.

According to al-Maliki, President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva “showed leadership, courage, commitment and humanism throughout the current crisis in Gaza” and spoke in a “strong and clear” way, describing “the situation as it is” which caused indignation on the part of Israel, which declared Lula “persona non grata” for Tel Aviv.

“For the Palestinian chancellor, who expressed serious concern about the risks of imminent military action in Rafah, the Brazilian president has been one of the few world leaders to act in defense of civilians from the outset and to have the courage to ‘say the right words at the right time’”, said the Brazilian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

According to the Chancellor of the Palestinian Authority, there is a growing increase in violence by Israeli settlers against Palestinians in the West Bank and Minister Mauro Vieira reiterated the “Brazilian willingness to lead the effort for the admission of Palestine as a full member of the UN”, added Itamaraty. .

Mauro Vieira also visited the Brazilian Representative Office in Ramallah accompanied by ambassador Alessandro Candeias.
