Brazilian President Lula Condemns “Russia’s Violation of Ukraine’s Territorial Integrity”

These criticisms echo those made by Moscow and Beijing, which blame Western countries for the war that began in February 2022 with the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
President Lula’s top foreign policy adviser, Celso Amorim, called“absurd” Mr. Kirby’s statements. “We have several points of convergence [avec la Russie]but Brazil has repeatedly condemned, under the current government, the invasion of Ukraine”told GloboNews M. Amorim.
The statements of the American spokesperson had already been rejected on Monday by the Brazilian Foreign Minister, Mauro Vieira, after the latter had received his Russian counterpart, Sergei Lavrov. “I don’t know how or why [M. Kirby] came to this conclusion. But I don’t agree at all.”he said.
Kiev, for its part, announced on Tuesday that it had invited the Brazilian president to pay a visit to Ukraine so that he could see the devastation caused by the invasion of the country, while criticizing his mediation efforts, considered as an alignment with the position of Moscow.
Unlike several Western powers, Brazil has never imposed financial sanctions on Russia or agreed to supply ammunition to Kiev, and tries to position itself, like China, as a mediator.
