For the first time in the history of the FIBA Basketball World Cup, female referees officiated.
Amy Bonner, Blanca Burns and Jenna Reneau: forever the pioneers of the women’s whistle on a World Cup court.
So of course, there had already been Chantal Julien, the French referee who held the men’s match between the United States and Germany, during the Beijing Olympics in 2008. But that’s another competition. And – for once – she was singular in her breakthrough. Amy Bonner, Blanca Burns and Jenna Reneau were considered and perceived as referees legit. That’s to say ? Seeing them holding the whistle caused nothing in our minds. All season – and for a while now, with Violet Palmer since 1997 – Ashley Moyer-Gleich and Natalie Sago officiate on the NBA courts. And yet, we learn that Bonner, Burns and Reneau are the first three women to referee in the World Cup. FIBA is also getting involved. Later, of course, but in the end, that doesn’t really matter. Their integration into the men’s international line-up is successful. Doors now open to the next ones!
