If drag queens continue to impose themselves on our stages and on our screens, some of them are still marginalized. Women who devote themselves to this art must indeed constantly fight for their place in the spotlight. “It’s more and more accepted, but the battle is far from won,” sighs transgender artist Sasha Baga.

Yes, more and more women – both cisgender and transgender – are practicing this profession on stages here and elsewhere. Quebec has its Sasha Baga, Velma Jones and other Daisy Woods, while the RuPaul’s Drag Race franchise introduced us to the Victoria Scone, Sasha Colby and Kylie Sonique Love of this world.

A widespread phenomenon, therefore, but which continues to create friction with certain purists.

“My mission is to make people understand that you can be a drag queen, regardless of your genitals. What is hidden under our costume, it does not concern anyone, ”says Sasha Baga.

This one has experienced both sides of the coin, having gotten her start in the drag scene before becoming the woman she is today. It was her alter ego that allowed her to put the right words to the gender dysphoria she felt at the time, and then to go through her transition.

“Drag saved me. For years, Sasha Baga has been my cocoon, my protective shell, my lifeline. It gave me the strength to go through my transition and to love myself as I am,” she says.

A dream come true

Sasha Baga therefore continues to make her way, and not only on our stages. After being part of the host trio of the show The drag in me, she will soon realize a childhood dream by defending her very first role on television. Indeed, we will soon be able to see her alongside Lenni-Kim Lalande and Marie-Soleil Dion in Fem, a fiction directed by Marianne Farley.

“I always dreamed of having a career in television and theater. And the filming of Fem confirmed that this is really what I want to do”, she confides.

♦ The series Fem is expected next winter on Unis TV. Until then, Sasha Baga will be leading the Sashalicious party! September 21 at Cabaret Mado.
