Police and special units were deployed late Friday afternoon near a home on rue Emile Vandervelde in Bouffioulx. A young woman was holed up in her grandmother’s home, with two children. “There was her nine-month-old baby and another nine-year-old child, but who is a cousin,” the Charleroi prosecutor’s office said on Saturday.
Shortly after 6:30 p.m., the suspect, armed with a blank pistol, surrendered to the authorities and was deprived of her liberty. His motivations are now known. “This is a family conflict about the suspect’s situation and reproaches made by the suspect’s grandmother about her way of handling her baby.”
The Charleroi public prosecutor’s office confirmed that it had contacted the investigating judge to request alternative measures for the suspect. “She lives where the hostage taking took place. And the family situation remains tense,” concluded the prosecution.
