“Fire in Charleroi”Mako informs us, via the orange Alert us button, around 5:30 p.m. “Significant fire in Charleroi”Elena texts us a few minutes later.

The Charleroi firefighters confirm that they were called at 4:56 p.m. for a fire in a four-storey two-storey house on Boulevard Paul Janson in Charleroi. “It’s a roof fire, the roof has broken through and two pumpers are on site”, we are told. Two ladders and a tank were also sent.

Firefighters worked for several hours to try to bring the fire under control. We learned around 6:15 p.m. that a person was missing: firefighters were looking for a person with reduced mobility. But the search was made difficult by the intensity of the fire under the attic.

The floors are difficult to walk on, the firefighters tell us. The occupant of the premises was often hospitalized, but according to the latest investigations by the Charleroi police zone, this person was not in hospital at the time of the fire.

Around 9 p.m., an officer from the Charleroi emergency zone informed us that “the teams had to end their search.” A security perimeter was set up around the damaged apartment. “Given the state of the floors, the search for victims will only be able to resume tomorrow morning, with suitable aerial resources.”
