While it was scheduled for the month of June, the increase in the minimum wage is finally fixed a month earlier. It was Elisabeth Borne herself who announced it recently.

Raising the minimum wage

Smic or minimum wage interprofessional growth is the minimum wage an employee can earn. This therefore means that the employee cannot pocket an hourly wage lower than the minimum wage. However, there is still an exception for employees under the age of 18 and those who are still beginners.

If an employer ever pays its employees less than this minimum wage, it should pay a fine of 1500 euros.

According to the information received, the value of the minimum wage goes very soon to increase in France. On the move in a System U hypermarket in Hips, Elisabeth Borne confided in this subject. The Prime Minister had revealed that this upgrade will happen sooner than expected.

Indeed, from May 1, 2023, the minimum wage will increase “by just over 2%”. Which means that “the minimum wage will have increased by 6% in one year”as the politician clarified.

Thus, if today, the minimum wage is still estimated at 1709.28 euros, it will therefore be increased to 1,743.46 euros from May.

Price increase

As a reminder, the increase in minimum wage is related to the Consumer Price Index (CPI).

If the CPI experiences an increase of at least 2%, the value of the minimum wage automatically also rises in the same proportions. This applies “from the first day of the month following the publication of the index leading to this increase”, as can be seen in article L3231-5 of the Labor Code.

However, on Friday April 14, the CPI increased as revealed by INSEE. A rise in prices that has occurred as quickly as possible.

In fact, around the middle of March, INSEE estimated “an increase of more than 2% on June 1, 2023”. At that time, he had all the same specified that nothing was certain yet since “It’s conditioned by the trajectory of inflation, and you never know”.

Finally, prices increased to 2.19% between November 2022 and March 2023. Consequently, the Smic will also increase by 2.19% earlier than expected.

The amounts of the minimum interprofessional growth wage in Europe

It is not only in France that the minimum wage has been introduced. Indeed, currently, 22 member countries of the European Union also set the minimum amount an employee should earn per hour.

On the other hand, in countries such as Denmark, Austria, Italy, Sweden or even Finland, there is no minimum wage. Which means that employees set the amount of salary as they want.

On the one hand, in the case of Belgium, the minimum wage was set at 1,955.04 euros during the first half of the year 2023. An amount which is not far from the value of the minimum wage set up in Germany since it amounts to 1,987.00 euros.

In Portugal, they have also set a minimum wage and it has been estimated at 886.67 euros in 2023. The minimum wage in Spain is notably set at 1166.67 euros. A sum put in place since the second half of the year 2022.
