For his scientific column, Martin Carli comes to tell us about very encouraging clinical trials for a vaccine against breast cancer at the microphone of Patrick Lagacé.
“Encouraging in many ways, because in fact, it is a vaccine that was announced in 2021 against a form of breast cancer that is really very aggressive. We call this the triple negative.
“Why triple negative? Because on the tumor cells of this cancer, we do not have the receptors for two hormones, progesterone and estrogen. Then, it is also not cells that produce in excess a protein called HER2. So those are the three usual avenues for current breast cancer treatments.
“So these are cells that are complicated to treat. We don’t really have any options right now against this. In addition, it is an aggressive cancer. It accounts for approximately 10 to 15% of cases. And since there are few treatment options, we will not be surprised to learn that even when we manage to remove it, we go into remission, but it is a cancer that regularly recurs.
“Researchers announced in 2021 a vaccine which, essentially, targets a protein in these cells. And there, the vaccine should stimulate the immune system to enter the war.
