Breaking Records: Atlanta Braves on Pace to Break MLB Home Run Record in Historic Season

DENVER – The Braves set a new single-season home run record in franchise history and have 30 games to try to break the major league record.

Venezuelan Orlando Arcia had the honor of hitting the club’s historic 250th home run in the sixth inning of the Braves win 7-3 over the Rockies Wednesday night at Coors Field.

“That’s pretty special,” Braves manager Travis d’Arnaud exclaimed. “Everyone is so good with their focus and staying within themselves. Fortunately, we were rewarded with home runs. It’s fun to be a part of all of this.”

Marcell Ozuna, Kevin Pillar and Arcia all homered in support of Darius Vines, who gave up just two runs in 6.0 innings in his major league debut. Vines became the first visiting pitcher to allow two runs or fewer and pitch at least six innings in his Coors Field debut.

“This lineup is ridiculous,” added Vines, the Braves’ No. 10 prospect on MLB Pipeline’s list.

Debuting in Denver may not be an easy task, but the challenge becomes less challenging when you have a lineup like Atlanta to back you up. With a Major League-leading 250 four-corner hits, the Braves have hit 40 more home runs than any other team. Atlanta is on pace to accumulate 306 (306.8 to be precise) home runs, one less than the MLB record set by the Twins in 2019.

This year’s Braves broke the franchise record set in 2019, when Ronald Acuna Jr., Freddie Freeman and Josh Donaldson homered at least 37 times each. The 2022 club now ranks third in franchise history with 243 shots.

“The long drive characterizes us as a team,” Braves manager Brian Snitker said. “This is how we are made.”

Matt Olson (43), Ozuna (31) and Austin Riley (31) have all hit the 30-homer mark. Acuña (29) and Ozzie Albies (28) could soon join them. If they do, the Braves will join the 2019 Twins as the only teams to have five hitters with at least 30 home runs each in the same season.
