Formentera (Spain) – The picturesque bay of Playa Cavall d’en Borras on the Mediterranean island of Formentera is a hotspot for the rich and beautiful. Now the idyllic place has become the scene of a fire inferno!

The luxury yacht “Irmao” went up in flames there on Saturday at 6 p.m. According to the British tabloid “Daily Mail”, the ship, which is more than 26 meters long, belongs to the Spanish poker player Diego Gomez Gonzalez (34, nicknamed “the lion”) from Madrid.

It is not yet known whether professional player Gonzales was on board at the time. He got his nickname after competing in the 2012 European Poker Tour in Prague in a full body lion costume.

Gonzales is also said to rent out the boat, built in 1995, for €46,000 a week. It can accommodate 12 people (VIP cabin, double cabin and four twin cabins) and also has a jacuzzi on deck.

Flames visible to Ibiza

When the devastating fire broke out on Saturday, twelve passengers and five crew members were on board. The flames spread within minutes, turning the yacht into a fireball.

The flames are said to have even been visible from the neighboring island of Ibiza. On the water off Formentera, onlookers quickly gathered in their own boats and followed the fire inferno on the sea like a spectacle.

Luckily, guests and crew were able to get to safety in lifeboats. A man (39) is said to have been taken to a hospital with minor burns.

The Spanish Coast Guard responded to the emergency by towing the yacht further out to sea and helping to extinguish the flames. According to the authorities, the burning ship sank in the sea.

Formentera Council officials said they would be monitoring the situation over the next few days. So far, however, no fuel contamination has been detected. The ship’s owner is responsible for salvaging the yacht.
