Brenpo Group supplies calipers to all 10 teams in the 2022 F1 season[F1-Gate .com]

Brembo has further strengthened its ties with the F1 Grand Prix for the 2022 F1 World Championship, which kicks off at the Bahrain Grand Prix on March 20th.

Brembo, an industry leader in the development of braking technology, has taken advantage of its vast track record of supporting 27 drivers’champions, 31 constructors’ championships and 463 wins through the supply of products to F1 cars over the past 47 years. This season, we customized the braking system for each team.

Most machines also supply hydraulic systems (calipers, master cylinders, by-wire units) and friction materials (carbon discs, brake pads).

New braking system for 2022 F1 cars
Brembo’s braking system will play an important role in 2022 F1. The brake system developed by Brembo engineers is completely new, while maintaining top-class performance and complying with the latest FIA regulations and restrictions.

The new regulations have changed the tire size from 13 inches to 18 inches and increased the size of the brake discs. The carbon discs that Brembo will supply in the 2022 season have a diameter of 278mm for the front, increased to 328mm, and the thickness is 32mm, which is the same as before. For the rear, it has increased from 266 mm to 280 mm, and the thickness has also increased from 28 mm to 32 mm.

The positions of the calipers and brake pads have also been redesigned. The major change is the “regulated parts”, even for the front wing, which requires the same for all machines. Using this change, the aerodynamic load of the machine was increased and the air cooling of the braking system was limited.

There are also provisions that affect the design of brake discs. Until 2021, the maximum number of brake disc holes was 2.5 mm and 1,480. This season, the number of fronts has decreased from 1,000 to 1,100, and the number of rears has decreased from 1,050 to 900. The diameter has also been changed to 3 mm or more. That is, while the thickness of the brake disc is the same as that of the conventional one, the number of holes is increased and the number of brake discs is reduced, so that the air cooling property is lowered. Perforated brake pads have also been banned this season, so Brembo will offer the team two options.

In terms of weight, the 2022 braking system weighed about 700g per tire and about 3kg more than the previous season.

All teams adopt Brembo Group calipers
In 2022, Brembo will have another historic season. It is the first time since 1975 to supply calipers to all 10 participating teams. Brembo calipers will be supplied to nine teams, and the remaining one team will be supplied by AP Racing, headquartered in Coventry, England, a brand of the Brembo Group.
2022 F1 World Championship Caliper
All 20 F1 drivers use a new monoblock caliper with a nickel-plated finish. The number of pistons is the maximum number of 6 pistons permitted by the regulation. The rear brake by-wire unit developed by Brembo and AP Racing to adjust the balance of braking force between the bronte and the rear will also be adopted by the five teams.

Customization, telemetry, maintenance
The settings are different for each machine. Some teams demand lighter weight than rigidity, while others prioritize rigidity even if it is heavy. The Brembo Group engineers worked with each team to determine the best balance of weight and stiffness for each machine and create the optimum brake caliper for each. Since each team can constantly grasp the temperature of the brake disc and caliper through the sensor in the wheel, both the team and the driver can manage the braking performance of the machine and maximize it.

About the 2022 regulation
Among the biggest changes in the 2022 season regulation, there are some that are difficult to understand from the outside and affect the bottom of the floor. By eliminating the step (“stepped bottom”) and instead providing two Venturi tunnels that make it easier to generate downforce, the following machines are less likely to be affected by the eddy generated by the machine, resulting in overtaking. You will be able to see the chance that the target machine will slam at a closer distance.

The aerodynamics that were allowed until the 2021 season have been completely abolished, including the barge board. In response to this, the wing has been simplified and has a new appearance. Significant changes have also been made to the tires. The wheel diameter will be larger due to the lower flatness, and a wheel cover will also be introduced. As for the tires, it has become a harder compound like a sports car with public road specifications. With these new regulations and the introduction of flat tires, each team was forced to review the suspension.

Each team took these actions within the team budget of $ 140 million for the 2022 season. That’s down from $ 145 million in the 2021 season. The dynamic air intake, engine cover, wing profile, etc. can be further customized if the team requests.

In the 2022 season, the weight of the machine has increased from 752kg last season to 795kg. With the increased weight and aerodynamics, drivers will be asked how quickly they can get a different braking point than in previous seasons on any circuit.
