## Archyde Interview: Bringing Brian Friel Home
**[Archyde]** Today we are joined by Seán Doran, Artistic Director of Arts Over Borders, to discuss a unique and ambitious five-year project celebrating the legacy of celebrated Irish playwright Brian Friel. Welcome, Seán!
**[Seán Doran]** Thank you for having me. I’m excited to talk about this project.
**[Archyde]** let’s dive right in.
“frieldays – a Homecoming,” marks the centenary of Brian Friel’s birth in 2029. can you tell our readers about the vision behind this project and its significance?
**[Seán Doran]**
Brian Friel held a unique place in 20th-century Irish literature, drawing inspiration from both Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland in his work. “frieldays – a Homecoming” seeks to reconnect his plays with the landscapes, communities, and the very “terroir” that shaped his writing. By staging all 29 of his plays across Counties Donegal, Derry, and Tyrone, we are bringing the essence of friel back to its roots, where his stories truly come alive.
**[Archyde]**
The project goes beyond traditional stage settings, aiming for a truly immersive experience. could you expand on that?
**[Seán Doran]** Absolutely!
We believe the landscape itself is a character in friel’s plays. We’re employing a psycho-geographic approach, where community halls, churches, and schools transform into stages. These spaces are inherently connected to the stories and themes, and by using them, we aim to amplify the emotional resonance of the plays in a more potent way. Each performance will take place in a different village or town, allowing audiences to engage with Friel’s work in diverse and meaningful locations.
**[Archyde]**
Which specific plays will be featured in the inaugural year of “FrielDays – a Homecoming” in 2025?
**[Seán Doran]**
We’re kicking off with some of Friel’s moast celebrated works alongside some rarely staged gems. You can expect to see productions of *Dancing at Lughnasa*, the Tony Award-winning *Translations*, *Faith Healer*, *The Home Place*, and *Volunteers*, just to name a few.
**[Archyde]**
We understand this project is a testament to Arts Over Borders’ commitment to bringing the arts to diverse communities.
Can you tell us more about your organization and its role in making this vision a reality?
**[Seán Doran]**
Arts over Borders is deeply committed to fostering a vibrant artistic landscape in the region.
We aim to make the arts accessible to everyone, breaking down barriers and enriching communities through cultural experiences.
“FrielDays – a Homecoming” perfectly aligns with our mission, allowing us to celebrate Ireland’s literary heritage while empowering communities and fostering a deeper connection to Friel’s profound works.

For “Faith Healer,” a play that follows its protagonist on a journey through Celtic villages, the audience will literally travel between venues, mirroring the character’s movement. The journey will begin in Glenties, County Donegal, believed to be the inspiration for Friel’s fictional Ballybeg, and take audiences through the Blue Stack Mountains and to the coast before returning to Glenties. “In some cases, the audience will be crossing the border in between acts,” Doran explains, emphasizing,”the message being “to see the border not as a divider but as a binder”. “Translations,” a play featuring characters who speak gaeilge (Irish) will be performed in the Gaeltacht, Irish-speaking areas, immersing audiences in the bilingual world of the play.

Starting in 2025, the ambitious project aims to stage each of Friel’s plays in locations that resonate with their themes and narratives. The culmination of this endeavor is planned for the centenary of Friel’s birth. “Irishness is the overarching theme,” says director Conleth Doran. “And re-evaluating the past into the present, that haunts all of us, through playwrighting.”
Immersive Theatrical Experiences
The productions will be more than just performances; they will offer immersive theatrical experiences. In “Volunteers,” set on an archaeological dig site, audiences will be transported to a location reflecting the original Wood Quay dig in Dublin. “Translations,” a play featuring characters who speak gaeilge (Irish) will be performed in the Gaeltacht, Irish-speaking areas, immersing audiences in the bilingual world of the play.Honoring a Literary Giant
Brian Friel, hailed as “the finest Irish dramatist of his generation” by The Guardian’s Michael Billington, possessed a unique ability, according to Fintan O’Toole of the Irish Times, to “salvage human dignity from the wrecking ball of history”. This ambitious project, promises to be a fitting tribute to Friel’s enduring legacy and a testament to the power of theatre to transcend borders and explore the complexities of Irish identity.

Brian Friel’s Works Return Home in Aspiring Five-Year Project
Table of Contents
The plays of acclaimed Irish dramatist Brian Friel, often compared to the renowned Anton Chekhov, have graced stages in London, Dublin, on Broadway, and beyond.now, an ambitious five-year project, “FrielDays – a Homecoming,” is bringing Friel’s works back to their roots – the landscapes, communities, and “terroir” that inspired them.
This unique project will culminate in 2029, the centenary of Friel’s birth, with all 29 of his plays performed across Counties Donegal, Derry, and Tyrone – places where the playwright lived and drew inspiration for his work.
Friel, who passed away in 2015, holds a unique place in 20th-century Irish literature. He lived his entire life in both Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland, grounding his writing in both cultural spheres.
“FrielDays – a Homecoming” will feature readings of Friel’s well-known works, such as the Tony Award-winning *Dancing at Lughnasa* (later adapted into a film starring Meryl Streep) and *Philadelphia Here I Come!*, alongside rarely staged pieces. The event is organized by Arts Over Borders, an organization dedicated to bringing the arts to diverse communities.
Seán doran, the artistic director of Arts Over Borders, emphasizes the project’s immersive approach: “We’re using landscape in a sort of psycho-geography that helps trigger the plays in a more heightened way,” he says. Community halls, churches, and schools – ”the landscape covered or uncovered” – will transform into stages and sets, with each performance taking place in a different village or town.
The initial year of the project, 2025, will feature *dancing at lughnasa*, the Tony Award-winning *Translations*, *Faith Healer*, *The Home Place*, and *Volunteers*, a lesser-known work which Friel particularly loved but which received harsh criticism in its London and Dublin premieres.
In a remarkably faithful approach, each performance will be staged during the season or month Friel originally set his plays. “In presenting them within the terroir they have come out of,you are strengthening that sense of place in time for the audience,” explains Doran. This aligns with the project’s overall goal of creating a deep connection between Friel’s work and the landscapes that nurtured it.
