A new study reveals that digitalization has become a driving factor for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in Africa, with almost 70% of them having invested in technology in the last 12 months to drive their growth.

These findings come from a report titled “Leveling the Playing Field for SMEs”, jointly launched by Vodacom Group, Vodafone Group and Safaricom, as part of the Africa.connected campaign. This campaign aims to bridge the digital divide in Africa’s key economic sectors through strategic partnerships.

Based on interviews with 400 SMEs in eight African countries, this study highlights the growing adoption of technology by SMEs, revealing that they recognize the positive influence of digitalization on their business.

However, the study also highlights the barriers African SMEs face in technology adoption. In addition to infrastructure and connectivity issues, the high cost of technology upgrades is cited as the most difficult challenge to overcome for 58.3% of SMEs surveyed. Additionally, the lack of digital skills and knowledge represents a major concern for almost a third of SMEs.

To encourage technology adoption by African SMEs, the report emphasizes the need to share best practices to improve decision-making and profitability. It highlights the importance of implementing proven processes and technologies, while highlighting the significant role technology can play in helping small businesses seize new opportunities, access finance and increase productivity.

Shameel Joosub, CEO of the Vodacom Group, says: “This report explores the specific challenges facing SMEs in Africa and examines what needs to be done to help these entrepreneurs overcome these obstacles. Digital solutions open up opportunities for entrepreneurs to connect, learn from each other and maximize their potential. »
